Knockback

For discussing the Fortune cards....

Knockback

Dave, Mila,

What's the ruling on using the Knockback card to move characters over cliffs or off rooftops or into lava flows?

Does "away" mean directly away from the attacking figure?

What happens if this takes the knocked-back character into an obviously fatal position (e.g. two inches into a lava flow or off the top of a skyscraper)?

Hey Richard,

First, the player playing the Knockback card gets to pick the direction -- and throwing the character off a rooftop, cliff, vehicle, or into the maw of a Martian Deathbeast is always fun!

Getting knocked-back is not automatically perilous. However, if Knockback places a character in a perilous situation then the character must immediately resolve the peril or extreme peril -- whichever is appropriate.

Whenever a character is knocked off an "obvioulsy fatal position" we resolve everything exactly the same -- except that if the character is not ko'd by the peril then they count as being in an extremely perilous situation. We work this into the the story...

BAM!
Oh no, no one could survive that!
But wait, they are actually hanging on a ledge just below the edge of the cliff...

So, although a a character may be thrown into an obviously fatal situation -- it may not be immediately fatal. If they can pass the Extreme Peril or Health check then they can be considered to have something to grab onto or save them -- at least for the moment.

I hope that helps.
